Going back to school in your 30s with a full-time job is no easy feat. Be prepared for long nights, lots of work, sacrificed weekends and holidays, less time with friends and family, and probably lots of caffeine. Taking 2 classes every 8 weeks, non-stop, with rare weeks off in between is exhausting. It will take a lot out of you. You may want to give up or take time off. My advice? Keep going! I'm not trying to discourage you. In fact, I recommend that you take that leap, dive into the books, and do not give up, no matter how exhausted you are. Be sure to put a TON of effort into every single assignment and discussion post. When you graduate, you'll realize that hard work and sacrifice DOES pay off. The end result is worth it!

I believe I had Sara Phillips very briefly as my first advisor when I was first signing up for Grantham. A wonderful, and very helpful advisor that deserves a shoutout. She should be recognized for her role in transitioning me into Grantham and helping me get settled with registering for classes and determining the proper path forward with Grantham. Though she was my first advisor (if memory serves) for a very short period or time, my interactions with her have been very positive. Natalie was my second advisor and every email and interaction with her was wonderful. Rooting me on when I felt overwhelmed with classes, saying in an email "That sounds tough! You got this!" meant a lot. I can be very hard on myself. I'm not one to give up, but when I get overwhelmed, I tend to shut down, and motivations like that helped me stay on course and succeed. Natalie transitioned over to Summer as my advisor sometime in 2024 (I think?), and Summer has been just as wonderful. The many interactions with her regarding the need for tuition reimbursement forms, to problems logging into my Microsoft 365 Office suite (twice!) to rooting me on when I joked about the one and only B I got, which I joked with her about it when I said that it "may as well be an F" because I was aiming for straight A's....remember when I said I can be hard on myself? Yeah.....that dang B was a bummer. I knew that Discrete Math course was gonna be a thorn in my side! I don't know where Grantham finds these wonderful people for student advisor roles. I can't imagine it's always an easy job. But the people this university is finding for these roles are really wonderful. Sara, Natalie and Summer are all excellent examples of advisors that go above and beyond. Thank you all for being there for me, helping me and rooting for me. Going back to school at 36 (at the time) was not an easy decision to make. But advisors like this that root for their students is quite incredible. Sara, Natalie and Summer. I always wanted to complete my degree, but was afraid I would never reach this milestone due to COVID back in 2019-2020, which caused me to take a break from pursuing my education. Not long after I started college my daughter had a brain shunt malfunction and had to have her shunt replaced in her brain. She had several different brain surgeries from April though January of the next year. The last surgery landed us in the hospital ICU for a week. May of the same year my mom was told she was terminal and came to live with me fulltime. She passed away the day before Thanksgiving. During these times it was a real struggle to get my work completed but I did it. I was a full time student, I had a full time job and had two kids under ten at home, along with taking care of my Mom.
